Roman Life

Romans were a very interesting group of people. They did a lot of things that we still do today. There is still much we don’t know about the Romans but there still is a lot we know about them. We know that they had famous temples, but we don’t know exactly all of the things that had gone on in them. Now to the rest.
They would start their day by eating breakfast. Plebeians(the poor people) and the Patricians(the rich people) had completely different breakfasts in the morning. The plebeians would have bread, either dipped in wine or dry. Sometimes they would put things on the bread like olives, raisins or cheese. People that worked would grab bread or something and eat it on the way to work. The patricians would have bread, fresh meat, fish, or fruits and sometimes they would use honey to sweeten the food because they hadn’t discovered sugar yet. They had their slaves cook and prepare the food for them. Then after they were done their slaves would bring out damp towels for them to clean themselves up with. And sometimes in the morning the schoolboys would grab things on the way to school.
Clothing was always different. Men wore tunics with woolen cloaks over them while just trying to look ordinary. When they wanted to look smart, they would put a tunic on then put a toga on over it. Woman would wear a tunic that would almost touch the ground and the put a stola over it which was a dress tied at the waist then a wool or linen cloak over it. Rich women would care about fashion a lot. They would wear lots of expensive jewelry to show how wealthy her family was.
Mid-Day held some things that most people would wish for. During mid-day they would eat lunch which was at about 11 o’ clock. It was usually cold. Their lunch consisted of bread, olives, fruit, cheese, nuts, salad, and left over things from dinner the night before. Another thing is after lunch people would have a siesta which was a nap during mid-day. During the siesta the streets outside would almost be deserted. Even the children got about 2-3 hours for the siesta. Then they had to return to school to finish the day.
After school and work they would come home to have dinner. But dinner for patricians and plebeians was definitely different by a long shot. Patricians would have great dinners. Men would hold dinner parties and the women and children would have to sit alone. But dinner was still great because there was lots of food that they had. Dinner also lasted hours at a time. Plebeians would have dinners but they weren’t always the best. They would usually have porridge made from vegetables. But occasionally if they had enough money they would have olives, wine, meat, fish, and bread. Some families were so poor that they had to have welfare. They got tokens so they could get necessities. That is what they ate.
Roman Houses were very different too for patricians and plebeians. Patricians had single family homes. That would include grandparents, parents, and children. They had beautiful paintings on the walls. Some of the other wealthier Romans might have a house with a front door, a kitchen, an office, a temple, a garden, and atrium, a private bath, bedrooms, and a toilet. They also might face their houses at the courtyard not the street so they would be able to keep safe from burglars. Plebeians lived in apartments. The apartments were called flats. They would usually live by their shops if they owned one. They had to fit a whole family in one apartment room. They usually didn’t have running water so they had to go get some and carry it back in buckets. They had to be careful if they were using fire because the apartment was so crowded it would be easy for it to start a fire on the apartment. They would also not have toilets in there so they had to leave and go to the public toilets to use one. These are their houses.
And that’s just about it about what would happen each day and about things that they have.
